Description

A classic Sloppy Joe sauce recipe for delicious sandwiches.


Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Brown the ground beef in a large skillet over medium heat. Drain off any excess grease.
  2. Add the chopped onion and green bell pepper to the skillet. Cook until softened, about 5-7 minutes.
  3. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute more until fragrant.
  4. Add the tomato sauce, water, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, chili powder, salt, and pepper.
  5. Stir everything together to combine.
  6. Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce heat to low and cook for at least 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, to allow the flavors to meld. For a thicker sauce, simmer longer.
  7. Serve the Sloppy Joe sauce hot on hamburger buns.

Notes

  • For a spicier Sloppy Joe sauce, add a pinch of cayenne pepper.
  • If your sauce is too thin, simmer it uncovered for a longer period to reduce.
