A simple and delicious Sloppy Joe recipe designed for feeding a large group, perfect for parties and gatherings. This recipe makes a big batch of classic sloppy joes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 5 lbs ground beef
  • 4 large onions, chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 4 (15 ounce) cans tomato sauce
  • 2 cups ketchup
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup white vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • Butter or cooking spray
  • 24 hamburger buns

Instructions

  1. In a large pot or Dutch oven, brown the ground beef over medium-high heat. Drain off any excess fat.
  2. Add the chopped onions to the pot with the beef and cook until softened, about 5-7 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
  3. Stir in the tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, white vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper.
  4. Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce heat to low, cover, and cook for at least 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. For best flavor, simmer for 1-2 hours. This makes a great make-ahead sloppy joe recipe for guests.
  5. To serve, lightly toast the hamburger buns. You can also lightly butter or spray them with cooking spray and toast them under the broiler or in a pan.
  6. Spoon a generous amount of the sloppy joe mixture onto the bottom half of each bun.
  7. Top with the other half of the bun.
  8. Serve your sloppy joes for a crowd immediately. This hearty sloppy joe recipe for a big event is a guaranteed hit.

Notes

  • This recipe is easily scalable for even larger crowds.
  • You can add bell peppers along with the onions for extra flavor and vegetables.
  • For sloppy joe sliders for a crowd, use smaller slider buns.
  • This is a fantastic option for feeding a crowd sloppy joes at a barbecue.
