- 1 small onion, diced
- 1 green bell pepper, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- ½ tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
- 1 tbsp ketchup (adds a slight tang)
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1 tbsp cornstarch (to thicken the sauce)
- 1 cup provolone cheese, shredded
- 4 hamburger buns, toasted
Optional Add-Ons & Substitutions:
- Swap ground beef for ground turkey for a leaner option.
- Use Cheez Whiz or American cheese for a more authentic Philly cheesesteak flavor.
- Add mushrooms for extra umami taste.
Instructions
In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef until fully cooked. Drain excess grease.
Add the diced onion, green pepper, and minced garlic to the skillet. Sauté until soft and fragrant, about 3-4 minutes.
Stir in Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, salt, pepper, and beef broth. Let the mixture simmer for 5 minutes.
Dissolve cornstarch in 2 tbsp of water, then add it to the skillet. Stir until the sauce thickens.
Remove from heat and fold in shredded provolone cheese until melted and creamy.
Scoop the cheesy sloppy joe mixture onto toasted buns and enjoy!
Notes
- Use a toasted bun to prevent sogginess.
- Let the meat mixture rest for 5 minutes before serving to enhance flavors.
- Double the recipe and freeze leftovers for an easy meal later.
