This recipe features crispy tostada shells topped with marinated carne asada, creamy avocado, fresh vegetables, and zesty salsa. It’s a quick and customizable meal that can be enjoyed as appetizers or a main course.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound flank steak or skirt steak
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons lime juice
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 8 tostada shells
  • 1 cup shredded lettuce
  • 1 avocado, sliced
  • 1 cup diced tomatoes
  • ½ cup diced red onion
  • ¼ cup fresh cilantro, chopped
  • 1 lime, cut into wedges
  • For the Salsa:
  • 2 medium tomatoes, diced
  • 1 small red onion, finely chopped
  • 1 jalapeño, seeded and minced
  • 2 tablespoons lime juice
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Marinate the steak: Whisk together olive oil, lime juice, minced garlic, cumin, chili powder, salt, and pepper in a bowl. Add the steak, ensuring it’s well coated. Marinate for at least 30 minutes or up to 2 hours in the refrigerator.
  2. Cook the steak: Preheat your grill or skillet over medium-high heat. Remove the steak from the marinade and cook for 4-6 minutes per side until desired doneness is reached. Let it rest for a few minutes before slicing thinly against the grain.
  3. Prepare the salsa: Combine diced tomatoes, red onion, jalapeño, lime juice, and salt in a separate bowl. Mix well and set aside.
  4. Assemble the tostadas: Place tostada shells on a serving platter. Layer sliced carne asada evenly over each tostada. Top with shredded lettuce, avocado slices, diced tomatoes, and red onion. Finish with fresh cilantro.
  5. Serve: Offer lime wedges on the side for an extra burst of flavor.

Notes

  • For best results, choose fresh flank or skirt steak.
  • Marinate the carne asada for at least 30 minutes to allow flavors to meld.
  • Slice the carne asada against the grain for maximum tenderness.
  • Use fresh vegetables for toppings to add crunch and vibrant color.
  • Adjust the spice level by controlling the amount of jalapeño in the salsa.
