Description
Loukoumades are traditional Greek donuts, bite-sized and fluffy on the inside with a crispy exterior, traditionally soaked in honey syrup and sprinkled with nuts. This recipe offers variations with matcha, cookie & cream, and chocolate sauces.
Ingredients
Scale
- Dough:
- 1 cup Lukewarm Milk
- 1 cup Lukewarm Water
- 2 tbsp Sugar
- 11 g Active Dry Yeast
- 3¼ cup All purpose Flour
- 1 tsp Salt
- 4 tbsp Olive Oil
- Sauce:
- 1 ml Water
- 1 g Sugar
- ⅓ cup Honey
- ¼ cup Matcha Sauce
- ¼ cup Cookie and Cream Sauce
- ¼ cup Chocolate Sauce
- Nuts (pistachio and almond preferred)
Instructions
- Activate the yeast: In a medium bowl, combine lukewarm milk, lukewarm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir until well dissolved and let sit for 5–10 minutes until bubbly.
- Prepare the dough: In a larger bowl, whisk together flour, salt, and olive oil until just combined.
- Combine mixtures: Pour the yeast mixture into the flour mixture and whisk until smooth and lump-free.
- Let the dough rise: Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a clean towel and let the dough rest in a warm spot for 30 minutes or until doubled in size.
- Make the syrup: While the dough rises, combine water, sugar, and honey in a saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a gentle boil until the sugar dissolves. Remove from heat and let cool.
- Heat the oil: Heat vegetable oil in a deep frying pan over low-medium heat.
- Fry the loukoumades: Scoop 1 teaspoon portions of the dough and carefully drop them into the hot oil. Fry until golden brown and puffed, flipping occasionally for even color.
- Drain excess oil: Transfer fried dough balls to a cooling rack or paper towels to remove excess oil.
- Finish the loukoumades:
- For classic honey loukoumades, dip them one by one in the honey syrup and top with chopped nuts.
- For other variations, arrange the plain loukoumades on a serving plate, drizzle with your chosen sauce (matcha, cookie & cream, or chocolate), and finish with extra toppings.
Notes
- Ensure your yeast is active by checking for foam after 5-10 minutes.
- Vegetable oil is recommended for frying due to its high smoke point and mild flavor.
- Dipping a spoon in oil before scooping the dough helps prevent sticking.
- Loukoumades are best served fresh.
