Description
A classic Hungarian Goulash recipe, this hearty beef stew is slow-cooked with paprika and other traditional spices for an authentic taste of Hungary.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 lbs beef chuck, cut into 1-inch cubes
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 large onions, chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 3 tablespoons sweet Hungarian paprika
- 1 teaspoon hot Hungarian paprika (optional)
- 1 teaspoon caraway seeds
- 1 teaspoon dried marjoram
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- 4 cups beef broth
- 1 (14.5 ounce) can diced tomatoes, undrained
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup cold water
- Optional garnishes: sour cream, fresh parsley
Instructions
- Heat olive oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium-high heat.
- Sear the beef cubes on all sides until browned. Remove beef and set aside.
- Add chopped onions to the pot and cook until softened and lightly browned, about 8-10 minutes.
- Stir in minced garlic, sweet Hungarian paprika, hot Hungarian paprika (if using), caraway seeds, and marjoram. Cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
- Return the beef to the pot. Season with salt and black pepper.
- Pour in the beef broth and add the diced tomatoes. Bring to a simmer.
- Cover the pot, reduce heat to low, and simmer for 2 to 3 hours, or until the beef is tender.
- In a small bowl, whisk together the flour and cold water to create a smooth slurry.
- Stir the slurry into the goulash to thicken the sauce. Simmer for another 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Serve the Hungarian Goulash hot, garnished with sour cream and fresh parsley if desired.
Notes
- For a milder goulash, omit the hot Hungarian paprika.
- Adjust the amount of paprika to your preference.
- This traditional Hungarian goulash can be made ahead of time and reheats well.
