Description

French Onion Buttered Rice is a savory and delicious side dish combining caramelized onions, butter, and rice for a rich, comforting flavor. It’s versatile and pairs well with various main courses.


Ingredients

  • 1 ½ cups long-grain white rice
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp dried thyme
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  • Preheat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the butter and let it melt.
  • Add the sliced onions to the skillet and sauté until they become caramelized, about 10-12 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Add the rice to the skillet and cook for 1-2 minutes, stirring to coat the rice with the butter and onions.
  • Pour in the beef broth and water, then add the garlic powder, dried thyme, salt, and pepper. Stir to combine.
  • Bring the mixture to a boil, then cover and reduce the heat to low. Let it simmer for 18-20 minutes, or until the rice is tender and the liquid is absorbed.
  • Remove the skillet from the heat and let it sit, covered, for an additional 5 minutes.
  • Fluff the rice with a fork and garnish with fresh parsley before serving.

  • For a vegetarian version, substitute beef broth with vegetable broth.
