Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup unsalted butter
- 1 cup water
- 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/2 cup buttermilk
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- For the Frosting:
- 1 cup unsalted butter
- 2/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- 1/3 cup milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup chopped pecans (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13 inch baking pan.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt.
- In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the water and cocoa powder. Bring to a boil, then remove from heat.
- Pour the hot chocolate mixture over the dry ingredients and mix until just combined.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, eggs, and vanilla extract.
- Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until smooth.
- Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.
- While the cake is baking, prepare the frosting. In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the cocoa powder and bring to a boil. Remove from heat.
- In a large bowl, combine the powdered sugar and milk. Add the melted chocolate mixture and vanilla extract. Beat until smooth and creamy. Stir in pecans if desired.
- Pour the frosting over the warm cake. Spread evenly.
- Let the cake cool completely before serving.
