Description

This Black Forest cheesecake is a rich and decadent dessert that combines the classic flavors of chocolate and cherries with a creamy cheesecake base. It’s a perfect treat for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ½ cups chocolate cookie crumbs
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 3 (8 ounce) packages cream cheese, softened
  • 1 ¼ cups granulated sugar
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ⅓ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ½ cup sour cream
  • 1 can (21 ounces) cherry pie filling
  • ¼ cup cherry liqueur (optional)
  • Chocolate shavings for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a small bowl, combine chocolate cookie crumbs, ¼ cup sugar, and melted butter. Press mixture firmly into the bottom of a 9-inch springform pan.
  3. Bake the crust for 8-10 minutes. Let cool completely.
  4. In a large bowl, beat cream cheese and 1 ¼ cups sugar until smooth.
  5. Beat in eggs one at a time, then stir in vanilla extract and cocoa powder.
  6. Mix in sour cream until just combined.
  7. Pour the cream cheese mixture over the cooled crust.
  8. Place the springform pan in a larger pan and fill the larger pan with about 1 inch of hot water (this is a water bath).
  9. Bake for 50-60 minutes, or until the center is almost set.
  10. Turn off the oven and let the cheesecake cool in the oven with the door ajar for 1 hour.
  11. Remove from the oven and cool completely on a wire rack.
  12. Chill the Black Forest cheesecake in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight.
  13. Before serving, top the homemade Black Forest cheesecake with cherry pie filling and cherry liqueur if using.
  14. Garnish your rich chocolate cherry cheesecake with chocolate shavings.

Notes

  • For a no-bake Black Forest cheesecake, omit the crust baking step and chill until firm.
  • Ensure all dairy ingredients are at room temperature for a smoother cheesecake.
  • If you don’t have cherry liqueur, you can use cherry juice or omit it.
  • Experiment with different chocolate cookie crumbs for varied crust flavors.
  • Consider adding fresh cherries as a topping variation for your Black Forest dessert cheesecake.
