Description
This classic banana pudding recipe features layers of creamy vanilla custard, fresh banana slices, and crisp vanilla wafers. It’s an easy and delicious dessert perfect for any occasion, delivering a taste of homemade comfort.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups milk
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup cornstarch
- 4 large egg yolks
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 cups heavy cream
- 1/4 cup powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 3–4 ripe bananas, sliced
- 1 (11-ounce) box vanilla wafers
Instructions
- In a medium saucepan, whisk together milk, sugar, cornstarch, and egg yolks.
- Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until thickened. This takes about 5-7 minutes.
- Remove from heat and stir in butter, vanilla extract, and salt until butter is melted and smooth.
- Pour custard into a bowl. Cover the surface directly with plastic wrap to prevent a skin from forming. Chill for at least 2 hours.
- In a separate bowl, whip heavy cream with powdered sugar and vanilla extract until stiff peaks form.
- Gently fold the whipped cream into the chilled custard.
- Layer your banana pudding: spread a layer of vanilla wafers in the bottom of a serving dish.
- Top with a layer of sliced bananas.
- Spoon a layer of the custard mixture over the bananas.
- Repeat the layering process with vanilla wafers, bananas, and custard until all ingredients are used, ending with a layer of custard.
- Chill the banana pudding with vanilla wafers for at least 1 hour before serving.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, use whole milk.
- Ensure bananas are ripe but not overly soft for the best texture.
- You can assemble this banana pudding with vanilla wafers ahead of time, but add the final layer of bananas just before serving to prevent them from browning.
- Nilla wafers are a popular choice for this classic banana pudding.
